Measurement Guide For X-Back Harness

How to Measure Your Dog for an X-Back Harness

Tape Measure

What You'll Need

  • Fabric measuring tape
  • Pencil/pen and paper
  • Your dog
  • Treats for your dog
  • Someone to assist you (optional, but recommended)

Before You Start

Measuring your dog for a harness is a simple matter of sketching an imaginary harness on your dog's body. Here are some helpful tips to ensure a perfectly fitting harness:

  • Ensure your dog is standing straight and level with their head up, looking forward, and legs square. Avoid measuring if your dog is hunched or crouching.
  • Having someone assist you can be beneficial—they can distract your dog with treats or toys and ensure they’re standing properly, which helps you get accurate measurements.
  • Use a soft measuring tape and measure the dog's body, not the fur. For dogs with heavy coats, pull the tape snug but not tight.
  • When measuring between points, keep a finger on each point to maintain accuracy.
  • Avoid pulling the tape too tight, as this can result in inaccurate, shorter measurements.
  • Providing your dog's breed, build, and weight helps us ensure the accuracy of your measurements.
  • Proper measurements are crucial—measure three times to ensure consistency.
  • If desired, provide your dog's name for it to be sewn onto the harness at no additional cost (applies to custom orders only).

The guide below will help you take the required measurements for an X-Back Harness. Please follow the instructions carefully for the best results:

X-Back Measurement 1

#1 Neck (Point A to Point B)

  • Start at the center of the front of the chest bone, near the top, where the webbing will cross the chest (Point A).
  • Do a half measurement directly to the spine between the top tips of the shoulder blades (Point B).
  • Double it for the full neck circumference.
X-Back Measurement 2

#2 Last Rib (Point A to Point C)

  • Start at Point A on the center of the front of the chest bone near the top.
  • Measure down the center of the chest first.
  • Then angle toward the base of the tail.
  • Feel for the last rib and stop on it (Point C).
X-Back Measurement 3

#3 Length (Point C to Point D)

  • Start at the last rib (Point C).
  • Measure to the base of the tail (Point D).
  • Add the last rib measurement (A to C) to the base of the tail measurement (Point D) for the full length.
